Using Treasured for Weddings

As it’s #weddingwednesday and it seems that love is in the air at the moment, I thought I’d write my blog this week on how we use Treasured for weddings and other special occasions.

A wedding is a wonderful, happy occasion – when you have a party that’s all about you!! It’s one of the most special days of your life, and you want to record and save all the precious memories that you can of your big day for the future – to look back at the photos with your children and families for the rest of your lives.

This obviously means LOTS of photos.. but also messages, guest books, telegrams etc etc.

When my husband and I got married (TEN YEARS AGO!!!) we put some disposable cameras on the tables at the reception, and eventually got those photos developed, to see the day from a different view.

These days, everyone has a camera, probably a digital camera, even if it’s just a part of their mobile/cell phone – so do you ever get to see their photos of your big day?

With Treasured, it’s really easy for the bride & groom to create a Treasured box for their big day. They can then invite their guests through Treasured, to add their memories into their wedding memory box.

image-2

This could include their photos, thoughts, notes, congratulations etc and become an online place to store and share all the different aspects of the day from the guests’ perspective – a view that all too often the bride & groom will never see!

image-1

The happy couple can also create their own boxes in the run-up to the day, to store their ideas, photos of the type of things they’d like on the day, outfit ideas, flowers, cakes, cars etc etc.

This is just one example of the many different ways Treasured can fit into your life, and make it better!

If you are planning your wedding and using Treasured, we’d love to hear from you, and hear your story.

Have a lovely wednesday!

Holidays / Vacations

At the end of February, here in the UK it was “half term” – the children get one week’s holiday from school, and many families choose to take advantage of this time to get away from the dismal weather at home and fly to foreign places.

This year we decided to take our littlest one skiing – she has been once before and got on well, so this time we went to Lake Louise in Canada, flying into Calgary and driving 2.5 hours up to Lake Louise.

We had a wonderful time – it was a different holiday to our previous skiing holidays pre-children.. no real apres-ski, just early mornings (thanks to the 7 hour time difference!) and a nice meal and an early night pretty much every night, as we were sharing a hotel room.

But it was really lovely, and we really enjoyed it. The fresh air, the pool (especially the hot tub) after skiing, good food and we made some lovely new friends.

While we were away, my parents looked after our dog, Poppy, for us, and we had an exchange of photos all week!

We created an event in Treasured, into which we added new photos of our holiday and the fun times we were having – we then added the event into my memory box, my husband’s memory box and our daughter’s memory box (with three clicks!) and our families were able to see what we were up to.

At the same time, my parents were taking photos of Poppy and putting them into her treasured memory box, so that we could see what fun she was having!

This is just a small example of how Treasured becomes a private sharing network as well as a family history for the future, for us all to look back on and enjoy!

We’d love to hear how you have used Treasured lately – please do let us know.

We hope you all have happy holidays/vacations/staycations, and a chance to recharge your batteries!

Safer Internet Day – 11th February 2014

11th February this year is “Safer Internet Day”, so we thought we’d talk a little about online security…

Online Security

We all know the basic rules to staying safe online… or do we? Things change so quickly, new websites and apps appear on an almost daily basis – how do you keep up?

shutterstock_105435860

There are some basic do’s and don’ts… It’s important to make sure you and your children know what they are.

DO: Change your passwords regularly.
DO: Connect with people you already know and trust online.

DON’T: Use an easily guessed name or date of birth for passwords.
DON’T: Connect with random strangers.
DON’T: Give out your address, bank details or other confidential information online.
DON’T: Arrange to meet a stranger you’ve met online.
DON’T: Email or post intimate pictures of yourself online.

While it is important to make sure our children stay safe online, there are measures we should all take ourselves to make sure our data and information is safe.

  1. READ internet security policies and rules before you tick “Agree”.. make sure YOU retain ownership of your data, photos, videos etc before uploading them to websites.
  2. DON’T post anything online that you wouldn’t want YOUR parents or children (or employers or prospective employers) to read – once the information is “out there” it is hard, if not impossible, to take it back.
  3. DON’T open any email with an attachment or click on any link if you don’t recognise who it’s from or it looks suspicious – delete it.
  4. Back up, back up, back up! We all know someone who has lost their photos, data, work or homework because their computer or hard drive has crashed – there are lots of cloud backup services to choose from – some of which are free or very reasonably priced.
  5. Don’t upload photos and videos of your children to public websites (unless there is a valid reason to do so).
  6. Know and apply the basic rules.
  7. Make sure you talk to your children, often and openly, about their internet security – maintain an open channel of communication.shutterstock_129101537

If you are worried about the safety of your photos, or just don’t likeposting photos of your children on websites like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram etc, there are several steps you can take:

  1. Turn off location data on your phone or camera – this data is embedded into the photo, and, with some clever software, can be used to see where you were when you took your photos.
  2. Use Treasured instead! With the Treasured.com website and the Treasured app, your photos remain completely private, and you choose who to share them with, and what kind of access someone can have to your photos and memories.

Nanny’s Notes – How I use Treasured by Lorraine

When Amy asked me to write a blog for Treasured I had a quick panic attack as I haven’t done anything like this for years, but then I thought how great Treasured is and thought “I can do this!” So here goes:

Me and my husband Trevor

Me and my husband Trevor

How do we use Treasured?

As we have 3 children and 7 beautiful Grandchildren, we have hundreds if not tens of hundreds of photos and keepsakes which would be tragic if anything happened to them.

We live quite close to heathland and there have been a number of fires in recent years on the Heath and folks have been evacuated from their homes, so you start to think what would we take if we were evacuated?

A winter walk

A winter walk

We used to have photos  backed up on a disc drive, but that died!

So, there are many reasons for using Treasured to store our precious photos and keepsakes of all the family. Our worries have been alleviated.

It’s great – you just add any new photos or happenings to each individual’s box and it’s there forever.  Whether you lose your phone or your originals you still have them stored.

A Treasured Memory Box

A Treasured Memory Box

I’m a bit of a technophobe so I don’t really understand about where they are stored etc. but I do know they are now safe and I will never lose them.

Take a look at the App, it’s so easy to use and for Grandparents it’s perfect as you can boast without having to scroll through loads of photos to get to the one of that grandchild doing her dance lesson etc. so you can bore your friends a lot quicker!!

Proud Nanny with a new Grandchild

Importantly, we can share our boxes with family and friends so they can add to your boxes. You still have control over what goes into the box, and you give permission to whom ever you want to view or add to the box so they remain very secure.

So there you have it Treasured a great tool to add to your phone or tablet!

Weird Weather?

Well, I wouldn’t be British if I didn’t like a good old moan about the weather would I?
It’s one of the things we’re most well known for in the world, I think – isn’t it?
So – is it just me, or has the weather this last few months just been freakish?

Here in the UK, we have had torrential rain for what seems like months now – we are almost getting used to it – but, maybe because it’s the rivers that are bursting their banks, it doesn’t always seem to happen in the same places!

Then at the same time, over on the East Coast of the U.S.A. they are suffering the effects of a “Polar Vortex” (great name!) which is making for some amazingly beautiful photos, but I don’t think I know anyone who would want to live like that for a long period of time – so cold, you can’t have any exposed skin if you go outside otherwise you risk losing your extremeties!! (well, unless you live in Alaska or some parts of Canada perhaps, but then you know what you’re letting yourself in for!)

A lighthouse in Michigan

A lighthouse in Michigan

And last, but not least, Australia is having a heatwave again – bushfires, temperatures over 40 degrees for days on end – how do you carry on a normal daily life in that heat and with the constant threat of being evacuated from your home in a hurry in the path of a ravenous fire with no regard for life or property.

Thermometer in Queensland, Australia Dec 2013

All of these freakish weather conditions carry with them the risk of losing your belongings, if anything happens to your home and its contents.

Treasured enables you to choose your favourite photos and memories, those ones that you REALLY don’t want to lose, no matter what – and keep them safe and secure (and private) out of your home and off your devices, so that you won’t lose them, even if your home were flooded or lost in a fire! And at the same time you can share them with loved ones around the world – or keep them completely private – its up to you!

The Treasured iPhone app is free to download, and the first 250Mb of storage is free (around 100 iPhone photos) – after which our generous 2Gb plan is just £2 or $3 per month – less than a cup of coffee a month – what do you have to lose?

Go for it! And let us know how you like it? And how you use it – we love to get feedback!

Just think, we’re halfway through January already – there is light at the end of the tunnel – I’m looking forward to spring!

HAPPY NEW YEAR From the Treasured Team!

Happy_New_Year_2014

So here we are, welcome to 2014!

We hope you had a great 2013 and are looking forward to 2014 as much as we are.

We’d love to know your thoughts and hopes for the year ahead – are you looking forward to a special event, or family gathering – please leave us a comment on blog.treasured.com or email us at info@treasured.com ?

Here at Treasured we know the importance of the photographs we take – they serve as reminders of people, places, good times and the power of a photograph is unsurpassed in capturing those moments in time for ever.

However, we take a lot of photographs today – we all have a camera on us all the time and we share a lot of them through many social channels instantly, but, in a way, that’s part of the problem. It’s so quick and so easy we never stop to look back and re-live those moments.

This Christmas we sat down with our eldest daughter (14) and looked through photos of past Christmas Eves and Christmas mornings.  It was a perfect example of why we take photos as together we smiled and laughed and remembered the excitement captured in those digital images.

We thought to kick off the new year we’d give you all some thoughts as to how useful Treasured could be in your life, and what you could use it for;

1. Children & families:

Create a Treasured box for each of the important people in your life and fill it with the memories you’d like to save for the future – not EVERY picture you take, but the ones that mean something, that you don’t ever want to forget or lose. Also the little funny moments, things the children say that you’d like to remember – see our FB and Twitter feeds for some examples of the funny quotes our users have been keeping.

2. Grandparents:

Give the grandparents access to each child’s Treasured box, so that they can add their photos, memories and notes as well, and look at them whenever they like – and to show to their friends!

3. Step families:

It is hard to create a central memory box for a child who lives between two families, but with Treasured it is easy! You can create a Treasured box for the child that ALL their parents have access to, and the Treasured box can even belong to the child (once they are 13 or over!)

4. Weddings and special events:

Create a Treasured box for the wedding (or special event), owned by the bride and groom (or event host) and give access to all of your guests – they can then submit written notes and photos from the day from their perspective into the Treasured box, and the box owners can decide what to keep and what to discard (duplicates etc).

5. A Journey

You can create a box in Treasured for any journey you are going on, whether physical, emotional or otherwise.

A student’s travel diary, a weight loss or fitness journey, an adventure of a lifetime.. all can be documented here, shared with anyone or no-one, and kept safe for the future.

6. Boys/Girls weekends Hen/Stag nights etc

Create a private memory box in Treasured for the people who were there – for your eyes only!

7. 365 – A photo every day for a year!

Create a Treasured box for your year and add a photo every day, or week, or month! – any photo that you think should also go into another Treasured box is easily added – with the tick of a check box!

8. My life Story:

Create a Treasured box for yourself and use it as a “this is my life” growing journal/lifebook. As we grow older it is nice to be able to look back on important moments in our lives and share them with our loved ones. With Treasured you remain totally in control of your photos and notes – no-one has access to them unless YOU say so, and you can remove access quickly and easily.

9. Digital Scrapbook:

Whether it’s newspaper articles, photos of the kids’ artwork from school or special birthday cards or mementoes – all can be kept in your Treasured memory box.

10. Hobbies

Create a Treasured memory box for your hobby – whatever it might be – whether that’s fishing, cycling, cars, motorbikes or something completely different, you can take pictures of the things that are special to you and keep them along with notes and memories in your Treasured memory box.

Treasured can do all of this and anything else you can think of using it for – why not let us know what you use Treasured for? We’d love to hear from you.

I’m going to start my 365 2014 Treasured box today – how about you?

Happy New Year! We hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful, happy and healthy 2014.

With all our very best wishes,

Amy & the Treasured Team.
